February Pre-Three News

During this short month we will follow the theme of Valentines and love.  We will create projects, learn about mixing the colors white & red and add the heart shape to those we already know.

Our nursery rhyme this month is the Queen of Hearts.  We will play a game taking turns being the “knave” who steals a shape away while the rest of us guess which shape is missing.

Our Valentine parties are Friday 2/10 &Tuesday 2/14 from 11-11:30.  Look for the sign up sheet outside our class.  We will have the children “mail” their Valentines first thing in the morning on the day of their party.  Passing out Valentines is much easier (and faster) if you don’t individually address them.  Simply sign your child’s name as who the card is from and leave the “To:” blank.

Do you remember learning to cut your first heart by folding a paper in half and cutting around a traced cone shape?  Try it with your 3 year old.  Guided cutting practice is always more exciting when you discover a new shape from the experiment!

Right before midwinter break (Feb. 20-24th)we’ll be talking about keeping our teeth healthy.  We will have our own dental center set up where the children can pretend to be a dentist to our furry stuffed animals!

After break we’ll be gearing up for our carnival on Sat., March 3rd (1-4) and Pre-3 Dad’s night on Mon. March 5th from 6:30-7:30PM.

Excerpts from an interview with Kathy Hirsh-Paskek author of Einstein Never Used Flash Cards (www.somethingyoushouldknow.net)
There’s an emphasis to push our children to learn more, faster.  But that’s not really how children learn.
“Children learn through play and discovery; they learn by picking up a block, turning the block, feeling the block, sometimes mouthing the block.  “
“Many of those “teaching” toys are toys that give an answer to the child.  And then they either: ding, ding, ding, if the child gets it right or they do something if the child doesn’t get it right.  But let’s think of the toys that we really remember.  Do you remember the boxes that we used to make into taxicabs?  Do you remember the forts you used to build out of the couch?  These are the wonderful memories that build childhood and they involve a lot of learning.”
