Kindergarten Readiness

Many parents find themselves in the position of wondering if their child is ready for Kindergarten. There is no one test, person, or philosophy that will give you a quick answer. Most often if you are questioning your child’s readiness for Kindergarten you should investigate.

There are many avenues to take. If your child is currently in school check with their teacher to see what they think. Look into the Kindergarten your child will attend and see what their expectations are for an entering Kindergarten student. Check with other parents who also had concerns and see what choices they made.

There are also plenty of websites that address this very issue. Listed below are two that we would recommend that you check out. They both have checklists as to your child’s readiness and the checklist from the Polk County School Districts has tips following each of their sections you may find helpful.

www.pcsb.K12.fl.us (go to site and click on Search in left margin – then enter Kindergarten Readiness – go to the Polk County School District Kindergarten Readiness Checklist)
