This class is a very social class as for many this is their first preschool experience. They will have an opportunity for circle time, art, as well as free play with emphasis being on socializing with others and getting along. They will have outside play as well as a snack time. This class is a fun first experience to school for your child.

3’s
The three’s classes move your child right along in their social development in learning how to get along with peers. Most of these classes begin their day with a balance of free play and art centers. The children can move freely between the two as they get their fingers dirty and play or listen to a story with their buddy. Everyone helps with clean-up, followed by circle time. Snack and recess complete the day. We work around theme units and take field trips that are appropriate to our themes. Field trips include the pumpkin patch, grocery store, bank, and an organic farm.

We offer 3 three year old classes so we can take a total of 36-39 three year olds.

Many of our Pre-3 students move on into this class. This class gives an extra day for our older 3's. The three+ classes move your child right along in their social development in learning how to get along with peers. Field trips include the pumpkin patch, trout farm, and an organic farm.

We offer two 3+ classes so we can take a total of 24-26 3+ students.

4’s
As the children move into our 4's program the class structure is much the same as our 3's program. They begin the day with a balance between free play and the art centers. The 4's classes work around theme units and incorporate a letter of the week. Some of the themes may be covered include endangered animals, musical instruments, health and nutrition as well as learning all about me, friends and family. Show-n-tell is very important too and helps them develop their expressive language. The 4's head off on various field trips including the pumpkin patch, dance studio, the dentist, a play, the Issaquah zoo, the fire station and a visit from a police officer. Everyone helps with clean-up, followed by circle time, snack and outside play.

We offer 3 four year old classes so we can take a total of 39-42 four year olds.

Pre - Kindergarten
The Pre-K class follows the curriculum of our 4’s program with more.  Because they have an average of 36 more class days a year than the 4’s they can explore a theme more thoroughly or explore a completely different theme than the 4’s.  Depending on the make up of the class and the fact that the children are 5 by December 31st – exciting things can happen in this class.  (see 4’s description above for a more detailed view of the class)

Science – Afternoon (2 days per week)
For over 10 years St. John’s Preschool has been pleased to offer a science enrichment program to Kindergarteners in our area. We offer two schedules, a two-day per week afternoon program and an abbreviated one-day per week morning program.

The Science class is one of a kind. Your child will come to have an understanding of Science and the world around them most elementary students don't have a chance to experience. This program is very hands on and the day is structured much like the rest of our classes. Circle time will be a time of instruction and experiments that will captivate as well as teach your child facts about science. The children will also have a chance to work on art activities (centered around the theme of the day), free play, outside play, and have a snack. Class themes include: hibernation, recycling, our bodies, energy of all kinds (electrical, heat, potential and kinetic), spiders, arctic life, the solar system, kitchen chemistry and much more.

Examples of fun activities include learning about composting and keeping a worm bin; the salmon lifecycle, including a visit to Bear Creek to watch the salmon spawn; and taking apart machinery to see what’s inside.

Science - Afternoon (2 days a week)
There are a total of 24 students in the two classes.

MUSIC
As an enhancement to our regular school program St. John’s Preschool is proud to have a music program. Once a week our music teacher, Valerie Kouldukis visits the children in each classroom (except Science) to teach them music and movement.

Each week the children excitedly wait for her visit to sing the “squirrel song” or “Tiny Tim” (a little turtle who eats the soap in the bathtub!). Along with singing the children are introduced to instruments that enhance their music experience. The school is equipped with triangles, rhythm sticks, a gathering drum, tambourines and shakers along with colorful scarves for the students’ enjoyment.

We hope to instill in the children a love of music and a broadening of their interests. Each spring our school under the direction of our music teachers presents our Alleluia Program. All the children gather on a Sunday afternoon to perform for their families and friends.

Music is a wonderful part of growing up – we’re happy to present the children with these musical experiences.

RAINBOW
This past fall we realized a dream by beginning our Rainbow Program for those children and families affected by Autism and its related disorders. Through much hard work, the patience of parents, the willingness of teachers to “try” and these wonderful children we launched our program.

The program is administered by the Director and run by our Program Director, Elisabeth Sotak. It is facilitated by our “shadows” who help these children participate in a typically developing classroom.

The children participate in the daily routines of the classroom. They are aided by their shadows to help them be a part of the class. Daily notes are taken by the shadows to help us determine if we are achieving the goals set by parents and the school before the year begins.

Parents have access to daily notes and participate in at least quarterly meetings with those involved with their child to assess goals and set new ones if appropriate. Resources are available to our parents in terms of support groups and outside services. The Rainbow staff is trained here at St. John’s by outside professionals.

There is no cost to the families for this program. It is a ministry of the church and preschool to educate and service the needs of all children living in our area. While we cannot service all children with needs this program does offer an alternative to the families in our area.

We are able to take 5-6 children per year into our program. Preference is given to those families who are or who have been members of our community. To apply for the program, please call the school.
