Kid's Corner

St. John’s Preschool was established in 1974 and has been in operation ever since in downtown Kirkland.  Throughout the years the school has grown to reflect the growth and changes of the Kirkland area.  At present we offer 18classes to 2 ¾ through Kindergarten age students.  We have 33 staff members which includes a director and a music teacher.  St. John’s prides itself on its family atmosphere where we feel we take care of the whole family, parents and siblings as well as the students.

St. John’s is part of St. John’s Episcopal Church and is a Christian preschool.  We accept children of all faith backgrounds to our school.  When asked to describe our school we often say, “We don’t take ourselves too seriously”.  Our main goal is to have your child feel safe and cared for while they are away from you.  We want school to be “fun” for them so that when they are 18 they’ll hopefully remember that school is a fun place to be.

We don’t consider ourselves an academic preschool, although your child will learn many things while they are with us.  They just don’t know that they’ll be learning. We focus on the skills that they will need to be successful in Kindergarten – social and classroom skills.  Into everyday lessons (which revolve around themes) they will be exposed to letters, numbers, shapes, colors, patterns and sequencing.  They will learn to take turns, sit on circle, complete a task, play with friends, and communication skills.

Listed below you will find our class offerings for the 2013-14 school year.  If you are interested in observing or would like more information on our programs please call the preschool office at 822-5079.  You may ask to talk with the director, Joan Sullivan or you may leave a message and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

Pre 3
This class is a very social class as for many this is their first preschool experience. They will have an opportunity for circle time, art, as well as free play with emphasis being on socializing with others and getting along. They will have outside play as well as a snack time. This class is a fun first experience to school for your child.

3’s
The three’s classes move your child right along in their social development in learning how to get along with peers. Most of these classes begin their day with a balance of free play and art centers. The children can move freely between the two as they get their fingers dirty and play or listen to a story with their buddy. Everyone helps with clean-up, followed by circle time. Snack and recess complete the day. We work around theme units and take field trips that are appropriate to our themes. When we study wheels they take a ride on a Metro bus. Other field trips could include the pumpkin patch, farm, and the library for storytime.

We offer 3 three year old classes so we can take a total of 36-39 three year olds.

4’s
As the children move into our 4’s program the class structure is much the same as our 3’s program.  They begin the day with a balance between free play and the art centers.  The 4’s classes work around theme units too and also incorporate a letter of the week.  Some of the themes that are covered are endangered animals, musical instruments, health and nutrition as well as learning all about me, friends and family.  The 4’s are also off on various field trips that include the pumpkin patch,  a play, the Issaquah zoo and the fire station.  The 4 year olds day also involves clean-up time, circle, snack and outside play.  Show-n-tell is very important too and helps them develop their expressive language.

We offer 3 four year old classes so we can take a total of 39-42 four year olds.

Science – Afternoon (2 days per week)
For over 10 years St. John’s Preschool has been pleased to offer a science enrichment program to Kindergarteners in our area. We offer two schedules, a two-day per week afternoon program and an abbreviated one-day per week morning program.

The Science class is one of a kind.  Through the curriculum that was developed your child will come to have an understanding of Science and the world around them most elementary students don’t have a chance to experience.  This program is very hands on and the day is structured much like the rest of our classes.  The children will have a chance for art activities (centered around the theme of the day) as well as free play.  Circle time will be a time of instruction as well as experiments that will captivate as well as teach your child facts about science.  The students will also have the opportunity for outside play and snack to round out their day.  The Science class themes are many, here are a few of them:  hibernation, recycling, energy (heat, electrical, potential and kinetic). our bodies, what’s inside machines, worms, spiders, arctic life, the solar system, kitchen chemistry and more!  (The Science class needs a minimum of 8 students to operate.)

Rainbow Program
St. John’s Preschool is proud to offer classroom integration to children on the Autism Spectrum and children with other challenges as we are able to accommodate them in the classes. You will be notified if there is a Rainbow Child in your child’s classroom. Due to confidentiality we are unable to tell you who the child is or what their needs might be.

Every classroom with a Rainbow Child will have an additional adult, called a “Shadow”, in the room. The primary role of the Shadow is to ensure the smooth integration of the Rainbow Child, but they will also be interacting with your child just as any other St. John’s Staff Member would do.

If you have any questions about the Rainbow Program, please contact the school to be put on a wait list.
